CUCC Newsletter. November 1993 (Clothing, hillclimb results, other general news)
3 Nov 1993
"IT'S A BIT NIPPY, ISN'T IT?"
aka CUCC Newsletter.
early November edition.
Hello again - it's newsletter time ('What
already?') although this one is going to be somewhat
shorter than the last one as I've hit a bit of a work
crisis (yes, postgrads get them too!).
Straight down to business – the CLOTHING
ORDER is to be sent off by the end of the month, so
get your orders and cheques to James Farnhill (St.
John's) as soon as possible. THIS CLOTHING IS
NOT Just FOR THE DIE-HARD RACERS – IT SUITS
ALL TYPES OF CYCLING AND KEEPS YOU
WARMER/COOLER (as appropriate) AND MORE
COMFORTABLE THAN ORDINARY CLOTHES.
Tourers and leisure riders are advised to buy some
thermal ('Lombardia') kit and/or a pair of (bib-)shorts;
Racers MUST have a club jersey for road racing and
team TT's and are encouraged to get club kit even for
solo TT's. ALEXA are supplying us this year – their
stuff is really good and much cheaper than Assos....
Prices have not been finalised yet – the club is
going to pay the set-up fee of f45 and the postage; if
club funds allow, we'll discount the clothing. The size
of the discount will obviously depend on how much
clothing is ordered, so to claim a big share, order
yourself lots of clothing! The system to be operated is
as follows: use the prices below to work out how
much money to give James - this will all be recorded
and you will be refunded the appropriate amount
when you collect your clothing....
Don't be put off by the prices - this kit is very good
and will out-perform most brands on the market AND
comes in CUCC colours – what more could you want?
SIZING: Alexa use the continental number system
(e.g. a 38" chest requires a '3', 40" a '4', etc.) but you
can just send us your waist and chest sizes – get a
(close!) friend to measure you up if you don't know
them.
THE SOCIAL SCENE: 'Variable' attendances have
been reported for the club evenings (with Aled
managing to miss his own !!!); the Formal Hall this
1
week won't be the most sociable we've had in the
past few years - is Churchill really so far away from
you all? Future events for your diary:
NOVEMBER 11th: Michael Colbert hosts – 54
Natal Rd., off Perne Rd. (in the south of the city).......
NOVEMBER 18th: James Farnhill (well, a pub
near John's) hosts again -he lives at B3 NORTH
court (sorry about last time's mistake there - the map
was correct, mind you...) at St.John's - come and get
membership cards, order dub clothing and chat about
things totally unrelated to cycling (and cycling!).
These are both WEDNESDAYS (in case you'd
forgotten) and begin "after 8 sometime..." – keep the
following Wednesday free if you can, so you can
attend the Christmas party/do/thing.....
P.S. Volunteers are required for the hosting of
events early NEXT term....
THE MEATY BITS (i.e. on-the-bike stuff!)..........
TOURING and ATB rides continue to leave the
Guildhall at 10 am every Sunday; destinations etc.
will be decided by those who turn up.....anyone
interested in ATBing should contact MARTIN
THORNALLEY at Queen's – or turn up to this week's
Sunday ride (8th Nov.).
(RACING) TRAINING rides will now leave Brookside
at 2p.mm. on Saturdays due to failing light by 4.30 - if
you can't make it until 2 then turn up anyway -you'll
probably find others are in the same situation.
PLEASE BRING MUDGUARDS (preferably fitted to
your bike) – lights are a good idea too if you can fit
them to your steed.
RESULTS: – I still don't have the '10' results as
Aled hasn't got them to me yet, but here are the
results of last Saturday's outing.....
Hill Climb, Chapel Hill (Haslingfield), 31/10/92
Timekeepers: James Farnhill, Paul 13ird.
1 - Stephen Morphet (Churchill) 1:47
2 – Cameron Smith (Peterhouse) 1:52
3 – Jeremy Turvey (graduate) 1:56 on an ATB !
4- Andrew Blain (Pembroke) 1:57
5 – Cesare Hall (King's) 2:01
6 – Tony Hornbuckle (Trinity) 2:02
7 – Phil Boaleh (Christ's) 2:03
8 – Iestyn Jones (Corpus Christi) 2:32
.........which just goes to show that being a light rider
on a light, stiff bike
(o.k., a Cannondale) is quite useful if you want to go
uphill fast!
Andrew Blain won the freewheeling contest which
followed (proving that
being 'long' is useful aerodynamically) while I placed
second and humiliated
myself when my Look pedals decided not to release
my feet and I sampled the
tarmac at close range....!
Varsity results and '10' results WILL follow in a
future edition.....
Well, that does it for this issue - more from this
keyboard soon !
