CUCC Newsletter, Lent 1993. (Ely hardriders and CUCC socials!)
1 Feb 1993
BRIEF ENCOUNTER
(aka CUCC Newsletter, 2nd of Lent term, short because hardly anyone's
given me anything to write and I'm too busy to make up 4 pages of the
usual high quality (!) stuff...)
This newsletter has three principal purposes:
1 - CUCC socials return ! Could you please make an effort to turn up ? It's
really embarassing to spend ages cajoling someone into hosting a social
only for it to be attended by just the host and half the committee! Of
particular importance is that the club clothing ought to arrive this week-
if it's here by Wednesday then it will be at the social this week,
otherwise it really should be here by the following one. The dates etc.
are:
24th February - TONY HORNBUCKLE hosts at Trinity - C9 Wolfson Building.
3rd March - JAMES FARNHILL hosts at BR North Court.
Both have held socials before so you'll have to look for maps in previous
issues!
2 - There is to be another MTB weekend trip ! This time it's during term
so you can all go. Proposed date is the 6/7th March, venue "somewhere
several orders of magnitude hillier than round here! " - contact Chris
Jones at Churchill or Martin Thornalley at Queen's or find them AT A
SOCIAL or on an appropriate clubrun (Sunday at the Guildhall).
3 - Aled's racing news.....unfortunately I've forgotten to bring the exact
details Aled gave me, but I can remember most of them.....
It may only be mid-February, but the CUCC racing boys have been quite busy
over the last couple of weeks. First event of the year was the Kettering
Hilly time trial, won by Gethin Butler (last year's runner-up in the BBAR
and multiple champion) of RT Italia in just under 30 minutes - Aled
Williams managed a mid-32 minute ride for a good place in the top 10,
while Tony Hornbuckle braved the fierce cold to record a good finish on a
horrible day.
A week later (Sunday 14th) the traditional first CUCC event of the year
took place - the Ely Hardriders 25. CUCC riders took the team prize, with
times in the 1-03 (Aled), 1-05 (Chris Cox) and 1-07 (Jeremy Turvey)
regions, Aled placing fifth overall. Tony H. and Andrew Blain rode,
finishing 2 seconds apart in the 1-10 bracket, while the CUCC sextet was
completed by a hypothermic John Blunsdon with a 'slower' time - DRESS WARM
whether racing or training!
Future events include the Lea Valley 2-up (entries for which have closed)
featuring the speed-but-not-size-matched Tony and Andrew, and CUPPERS!
This is this Saturday (27th) -meet at Brookside as usual at 2pm and ride
out to the course with the club (meeting me at the Golden Hind). Note that
non-students cannot ride for their old College (are you listening Jeremy
and Laurie?) and it would be appreciated if they would do a small service
to the club and TIMEKEEP ! I've done it before now, and everyone should
at some point. Note that anyone can ride the event, racers and tourers
alike - although any tourers who would prefer to watch (and timekeep!) are
equally welcome...
There's an open event worth entering - the County of Cambridge CA event -
entries need to be in by Tuesday (23rd) - if you can't reach the organiser
by post then try phoning him on the number provided:
All are encouraged to ride this event as we paid to join this association
this year!
The first national student event of the year is approaching - the BUSF
50km 4-up team time trial on Sunday March 21st - if you want to ride then
let Aled know as soon as possible. Selection for the teams will be made
based on Cuppers and other recent/near events and performance on Saturday
afternoon training rides ! The first team is pretty much selected (Aled
W., Chris C., John B. and Jon Lacey) while Tony and Andrew may form the
nucleus of the second - rumour has it that the third or fourth team may
feature James Farnhill and myself (provided the course isn't too
hilly) ...!
Finally, all the BCF and RTTC handbooks, membership cards and licences
have arrived, so come and get them at a social or collect them from Aled
at 172 Sturton St. If you spot an event you think is worth entering then
please tell Aled or me so that we (well, you faster riders) can get
everyone else in and scoop the team prize again!
